Colorado Springs Chinese Shao-Lin Center

What a fantastic, diverse group of students we have!

Here are some things they have to say...

Kung Fu has affected EVERY part of my life!

Kung fu has affected every part of my life—physical, mental, and even spiritual. Shao-lin meditiation fits with my contemplative prayer practice. There is an overall calmness in me now—little things that used to bug me don't phase me anymore.

Great community, never a boring workout, like at the gym

It's a great community of supportive individuals, and it's never a boring workout like at the gym!

This is something I can do together with my 16 year old son—it's totally awesome for us!

My #1 favorite thing about kung fu is that it's something I can do together with my 16 year old son. We don't have a lot in common, don't like the same music or TV shows, and have limited activities we both enjoy, except for kung fu!

Mental acuity as I age

Kung fu, the mental challenge of constantly learning new things will help my mental acuity as I age. I look forward to continuing to do 50 or 100 push-ups and situps every day well into my 50s, 60s and 70s.

Genuine friendships

I've never been a very social person, and as a family, we don't do much socializing, but the types of friendships I make at kung fu are different than, say, at work—here they are genuine and true. I enjoy the time to get to know people in this fun environment of common goals.

Real-world self-defense application, self-paced environment, great atmosphere

I love that this traditional Shao-Lin Kung Fu school offers real-world self-defense application, which has made me more confident in a potential situation, especially as a soldier. The physical fitness is fantastic, and I enjoy the experience of the self-paced environment where I can gain and learn. It's a great atmosphere where no one laughs at you if you can't do something as well as someone else. There is a lot of encouragement and it's just a great group of people.

Even if you're not great at working out, you don't have to feel self-conscious.

I love the physical fitness and increased strength. I'm noticing daily improvement in myself and in my forms. It's the most fun, extracurricular activity I have and even if you're not great at working out, you don't have to feel self-conscious!

Our instructor is amazing

Our instructor is amazing. I was scared at first that she was going to be harsh or judgmental, and she turned out to be such a great person!

Kung Fu has improved my overall quality of life

Kung fu has improved my overall quality of life. It's great in class, but especially when I practice the external and internal techniques outside of class—to have something to supplement and improve my life. I enjoy coming to a place where everyone is positive as opposed to just wasting my time hanging out with negative people doing nothing of value.

Regular exercise and physical discipline

It's great to have a program where I can participate for regular fitness and physical discipline on a consistent basis. When I'm not here, I notice it, that's why I make it a priority in my schedule.

~ Nathan B.

Fun, sweat, sparring, and keeping calm

For the past 14 years, the Chinese Shao-Lin Center has been a fun place for me to sweat, spar with other students, and it keeps me calm in my life! I love that there is so much material here, I never get bored. There's always something new for me to learn and challenge my mind and skill.

~ Jeremy S.

Time-tested, proven self-defense techniques

Kung fu has given me the versitility I was looking for as a martial artist. Shao-lin's time-tested, proven self-defense techniques are fluid rather than rigid like other methods I've trained in.

There is so much to learn in kung fu, my sense of accomplishment is so personally fulfilling. I gain so much from the professional training here as well as from other students.

~ Jon M.

Kung Fu is a HUGE stress-relief!

I don't know how much money I'd be spending with a shrink if I didn't have kung fu for even an hour, to take all the stress in my life and get it out of my head.

I used to be intimidated by sparring, but now it's one of my favorite aspects of Shao-Lin

I like the challenge of sparring people. When I first started at our sister school in Albuquerque, I was intimidated and scared, and now, as a 4th degree black belt, practicing my skills via sparring is one of my favorite aspects of Shao-Lin! And I love the unconventional way that it keeps me in shape.

Health and longevity, self-confidence, multi-state community

I really appreciate the health and longevity aspect of kung fu. I returned to my training about 4 months ago, and haven't had to workout out with my knee brace (active duty injury) in the past 3 weeks. Not to mention my greater self-confidence in my ability to defend myself and others in a real life adverse situation, and look cool doing it. I also enjoy getting to know and spend time with students from schools in other states as we gather for big events.

~ Matt S.
Retired U.S. Army

Anger management and improved school work

I used to lose my temper, but since I started practicing Tai Chi, when I feel myself getting upset or angry, I just take 5 or 10 minutes on my own to do some Tai Chi then I feel totally calm. The memory work in Kung fu has improved my school work too. Kung Fu is the highlight of my day!
