1 in 3 women are assaulted physically or sexually in their lifetimes, me included.
As a black belt, I thought my martial skill would be the thing that would help me prevent or handle any attack, but it was only part of what I needed.
I soon discovered that I wasn't at all prepared for the psychological aspects of abuse from an intimate partner.
Having the martial skill to protect myself didn't mean anything if I didn't have the psychological awareness and mental fortitude to use it.
The stark reality is that we can't eliminate all risk, and not all use of defense skills will end the way we hope. We just can't predict outcomes.
But we CAN prepare physically and mentally to make the best choices for us and others around us in the moment.
We CAN develop skills that will serve us well.
We CAN give ourselves as many choices and chances for success as possible by developing and fine-tune support tools and principles such as:
